I make a point to ask my doctor questions concerning any possible treatment options immediately following his examination. There have been times in which I failed to ask him about treatments, prescriptions, and tests he planned to order prior to his leaving my room. When I arrive in the lab, pharmacy, or testing center, I would be confused because I would be unaware of my doctor's reasoning for the treatment he ordered for me. It saves time and phone calls back to your doctor's office when you ask the right questions prior to your doctor leaving your exam room.
If your doctor wants to start you on a new medication, please ask the following questions prior to your agreement to get the prescription filled:
- What are the side effects?
- What is the length of time I will be taking this medication?
- Am I a good candidate for this medication? If so, what makes me a good candidate?
- If you are currently taking medications, is there a certain amount of time to wait between taking them in order to prevent a counteraction?
- Is this medication covered by my insurance plan? Doctors can check the coverage of a drug before prescribing it. My doctor does all of the time.
- If more than one medication is being prescribed for the same condition, please make sure your doctor tell you how they will work in contrast to improve your health.
Thanks Erica for the great informaton on having an effective doctor's visit. These are good tips for going in an being prepared. It seems like they don't have a lot of time to spend with you, so making the most out of the visit is a plus. If you don't write things down and keep a list, I've always found that there will be something I am bound to miss or not remember when that ask what brings you in today.
